Leena Mahaal (Born, 1998, Kolkata, India) is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Chicago, USA. She began her exhibition journey in Kolkata with her solo debut, “Stories So Far”, at the Academy of Fine Arts, followed by several group exhibitions and live comic art performances at the Kolkata International Book Fair for Kolkata Comics Publishers. Leena also exhibited her interactive work “Ghosts of Reality” in the Ars Electronica Campus exhibition 2024 as a student of SAIC.

Leena’s practice includes Painting, Digital illustrations, Graphic Novel, Writing and storytelling, kinetic structures, hybrid materials and interactive installations. As part of her practice she always questioned about self consciousness, origins, and reasons of crisis; be it generational, political, geographical or personal. Her practice is slowly evolving towards the motifs of hybridization in material, thoughts, concepts and questions. She also experiments with concepts of cultural metaphors , geo-political and ethnical crisis through narrative and visual storytelling like graphic novels, painting, traditional animation as well as moving structures and interactive installations. Her motif of blending traditional visual medium with technological components is currently part of her practice to ultimately build hybrid and fluid cultural structures that provokes societal crisis as well as connects ancient narratives with modernity.
